Web Design - The Invisible Hand to the Success of Your Business

Business and websites go hand in hand. A website is the focal point of your business, interacting with your customers and clients round the clock. People judge you by your covers and this is where a good looking website design steps in.

A professional website layout puts your business where it matters the most- in front of your customers and set you apart from the noise and clatter of your competition. How many times have you walked in a store which appears shabby? I bet you avoid stepping in, leave alone doing business with them. The same rule applies to your website- it is your virtual storefront and by designing an eye catching website, you are bound to turn a few heads and keep visitors coming back.

Picture this- your website acts as your storefront, your web layout and design the first impression your customers get, your content acts as brochure and catalogs for your customers to browse through, would you be willing to take a chance with any of the pointers that directly affect your business? A professional looking website layout portrays that your website means business. A website should be designed like a car with the purpose it needs to serve in mind. What’s the use of creating a vehicle without passengers? Getting a good looking website does not necessarily cost you a fortune. A well thought out website design would not only add value to your website but open up host of revenue avenues for your website besides creating value to your business. Making your website easily accessible and providing relevant content with your business niche creates a winning combination.

Before you start creating a website, there is an important factor to be borne in mind- your target audience. Your target audience should dictate your website theme and design. For instance if your business niche is real estate, your target audience is in the age group of 25-55 years and your website theme, layout and concept should be governed by your target audience and by over looking this key component you would end up turning your website-”internet real estate” into an “internet wasteland” . Your website should speak the language of your customers. Hiring a professional web designer to turn your vision into reality might come in handy but remember no one knows your business better than you, so your involvement would always create a personalized professional website leaving your footprint on the website, helping you to communicate efficiently with your customers. Make sure the website serves the purpose for which it has been created.

Business is what Business does- making contacts with the right people at the right time at the right place. But how can we do it all the time? This is where a website steps in. In simple terms it puts your business on auto pilot. Every Business needs a website-PERIOD.

The SEO Paradox

Could spending thousands of dollars, and months of effort to improve your page ranking, lead to your URL being penalized or even black listed from a search engines index?

If you are foolish enough to resort to questionable SEO strategies, or hire an SEO consultant who does; the answer is a resounding yes.

There are no shortcuts to improved performance at the search engines, no guaranteed formulas for overnight success. Promises of instant results, or a cast iron top listing should be greeting with a healthy dose of skepticism.

If you choose to forego the task of optimization yourself, there are plenty of reputable consultants online to choose from, but you would be well advised to ask what methods they will employ. If you or your consultants are tempted to consider the use of hidden text and keywords, hidden links, keyword stuffing, link farms or cloaking, you might want to think again.

If an SEO consultant suggests submitting your URL to 10,000 search engines and directories wouldnt you want to know exactly where it will end up? After all, we’re talking about the credibility and reputation of your Web site.

Trying to artificially boost your ranking at the search engines is poor strategy. Their algorithms will not differentiate between a premeditated attempt to trick your way to a top ranking, or your innocent use of a consultant who employs such methods, but the result may be that your site suffers either way.

If you are flirting with questionable SEO methods, you should ask yourself a few questions before you proceed.

  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • Does your strategy add value to your site and does it help those searching for the content you provide?
  • Is your site simply a collection of commercial and affiliate links, or does it deliver valuable content and good information to your visitors?
  • Would you feel comfortable explaining your SEO strategy to the owner of a competing site?

Google are constantly manipulating their search engine algorithm, in an effort to deliver a better product; Information that is more accurate, more relevant and delivers increased value to their users. Rather than try to do an end run around the Google search engine algorithm, consider embracing that doctrine.

A good, solid and ethical SEO strategy requires plenty of hard work and patience. The potential rewards are not limited to your site alone, but also to those of your link partners and most of all, the internet users who are searching for the service or information that you provide.

You can always fall back on the services of an SEO consultant if all else fails. You may find however, that a sustained effort focusing on some simple fundamentals, delivers the results you are looking for.

Keep it simple, make sure your site is well built, easily navigated and that your URL, page titles and headings are human reader, as well as search engine friendly. Simple text which describes the content of your page is most effective.

Content above all else, will start the traffic snowball rolling. Create good, original content, update it regularly and keep adding to it. Not only does this provide your readers with the incentive to refer your site to others and visit you on a regular basis, but it also attracts the attention of search engine spiders. The spiders will return to your site more often if they notice that you frequently update or add fresh content.

Quality content is also a primer for effective link exchanging. Approach other good quality sites related to your theme and explore the value of a link exchange agreement. Search engines dont just look at the number of links pointing to your site, but also whether those links come from sites containing content which is related to yours.

If you havent submitted your sites to the major search engines, do so by following their submission guidelines. You should also consider submitting your site to the Yahoo Directory and the Open Directory Project, but again, be patient, it can take months to get listed and with both Yahoo and DMOZ, a submission is no guarantee that your site will be accepted.

Questionable SEO strategies will always exist, as will the many people who choose to use them, but a far greater feeling of satisfaction will result, through the use of an ethical approach which leaves your credibility and the reputation of your site intact.

How to Use Free Organic Website Traffic to Get a Flood of Website Visitors

Often, new internet marketers and website owners ask, “what is organic traffic?” The simple answer is: hits to your web pages that are not directed there by a paid advertisement.

It is called organic due to the fact that the website owner did not pay for that specific visitor or for a specific ad to draw the visitor to the site, but rather the visitor found the site either from a search engine such as Google or via a link on a website directory or another site.

Getting organic traffic is a good thing because traffic can be generated without incremental cost or effort.

Here are a few basic tactics for generating organic website traffic.

The first tactic is getting incoming links, also known as backlinks. These are links on related sites that point to your site. This strategy assumes that people in your target market will stumble across the link to your site and click it. The link may originate from a website directory, blog, forum, or static website.

The second strategy is SEO; that is, Search Engine Optimization. With this strategy you take steps to rank as high in the search engines as you can using the keywords that are still important to your business. There are many search engines, but it’s commonly a good idea to focus on Google, Yahoo, and MSN; in that order too, because they are the top three search engines nationwide.

SEO strategies may change somewhat from search engine to search engine, but the steps taken are usually the same: keyword density, obtaining backlinks (a separate strategy, but still relevant to SEO purposes), proper page names, and a proper site map.

The benefits of good SEO are many. First of all, the organic traffic is free. Also, if it’s consistent, it can form the basis of a revenue stream that may be sold.

There are drawbacks, too. Organic traffic may be unpredictable, the search engines may alter their ranking procedures, rendering up to months of work useless, and the time it takes to draw in a decent level of traffic may be a long while.

Regardless of your business model, if you intend to keep your website for any length of time, you should definitely consider seeking organic traffic through search engine optimization.

YouTube Traffic - How to Get Free Web Traffic With YouTube (Part 1)

Who Else Wants To Generate Free Traffic With YouTube?

Yes, there a number of ways you can generate traffic on YouTube. The only problem is that most marketers get it all wrong and tell you about how you can make your YouTube video to be web 2.0 compliant.

In fact, all you ever really need to do is to have a basic understanding on how marketing with YouTube works. Then, with this understanding use it to your best of abilities to generate traffic to your site.

Step 1: Create An Account With YouTube

Upon joining YouTube you will be given a free account and that will mark the start of all the fun. Your account also acts like a virtual mailbox and gives you the benefits of being able to add and share videos with anyone around the globe.

Of course, you can only share the videos that you make to others. If you want others to see what you are seeing you can mark some video’s as in your ‘favourites’ tab. Now, if you do decide to create an advertising for your site then make sure its creative so people will want to find out more about you.

Step 2: Interacting With Other YouTuber’s

One nice thing about YouTube is that it acts very much like a social networking site. It has a group functionality feature that will enable you to kind of like create a ‘virtual group discussion’ that others can join in .

Like a mini-forum if you may. Apart from that, you can also choose to join other groups that have been created on YouTube and this gives you the ability to view their videos as well. They can view your videos too and that gives you even more exposure.

Step 3: Increasing Your Exposure

Quickly increase your YouTube exposure by uploading more and more videos of your own and get them all over YouTube. Be sure to provide good nifty content though and not just unrelated spam messages in video mode.

Feeds can also be created to go directly to your YouTube account and then people can ’subscribe to your feed’. A feed is important for more exposure because people will get updated notification about your latest work and current activities in YouTube, namely on your own business.

Away From Links And Toward Popularity?

Google has established itself as a leader in the search engine industry. Effectively Google retains, month after month, almost 1/2 of search engine inquiries. Their PPC advertising model, Adwords, is second to none and the possibilities for website publishers are endless with their Adsense, ad-publishing client. The company has created popular computer programs such as: Google Earth, Google Desktop, Google Toolbar, Picasa, and SketchUp. And they operate such online services as: Gmail, Google Trends, Google Scholar, Google News, and Google Groups.

The reason I mention these facts is that there have been many in the search engine world that have speculated that Google is moving away from links and toward popularity. What I mean is that in the traditional sense, Google has used the data based on the individual links that a certain website has pointing to it. There are several factors involved in evaluating the links data that helps Google determine the popularity of a site and importance of its content. In the new sense, many have speculated that Google has been able to gain a finite amount of aggregate usage data from its various programs and services that allows them to further develop their algorithm into a more accurate and relevant service. This allows them to really evaluate a site based on how popular it truly is and weigh it’s content and position in the search engines accordingly.

Honestly to me, it’s an ingenious idea and in part it has been verified by a post on Matt Cutts Blog where he mentions the new efforts Google is using to reduce bandwidth. He mentions the fact that Google uses their popular Adsense service to help index the web faster. This spreads the indexing load out a bit and encourages Google to use the same technique on their other popular services.

So what does this mean for the individual webmaster? This means that the direction of search results could take a drastic shift from the norm of link popularity to actual user popularity, which is more powerful than the alternatives. So in the future, I still believe link popularity will remain a cornerstone of the search engines algorithm, but that data will supplemented or be the supplement, in part to the popularity data.

Google Take the Guess Work out of Keyword Selection

If your familiar with Google Labs then you should know of two search tools the white coat technicians at Googleplex have been developing. Google Select and Google Trends. Both these search tools analyze keyword popularity in there own unique way. For instance with Google Select as you type your search term in the box Google will offer suggestions along with how many web pages they have in the index for that search term. For example type in the word Immigration and you will see all the other popular search terms used after the word immigration. You can now better select which keywords will work on your site.

With Google Trends (and a warning it can get addictive) you can compare lots of different keywords against each other. For instance type the word Earthquake into the search box and Google Trends will show how popular that keyword was over a time period. It accurately pin points when earthquakes struck most noticeably the big one at the end of 2004.

Now type in Earthquake, Hurricane - you can now see a comparison of these search terms, its a great way of finding out when things occurred in history. Try typing Olympics etc.. Why is it an important tool for keyword selection? Well its pretty obvious isn’t it? volume of searches = popular keyword

How to Get Over 100 Free PR Backlinks

The importance of generating backlinks to increase Page rank can not be emphasized any more, it is absolutely mandatory. Once you start your backlink building campaign, you will find that it can be a difficult task if you don’t know which direction to take.

The traditional way to acquire backlinks is to search the internet for websites with a high PR that share the same or similar interest with your own and ask them for a reciprocal link. A reciprocal link is an link exchange between two website owners where each party agree to place each others links on their websites. The problem that occurs when searching for reciprocal links is, if you are just starting out, then your page rank will probably be zero. Most sites that are already established do not gain any incentive to exchange links with you.

The other alternatives to finding established sites to link is to get a little creative in order to build some backlinks. We all know that Web 2.0 social networking sites have bombarded the internet, but what most people do not realize is that they are a great source of high Pr backlinks. You can set up an account with several networks, submit a blog with a link to your website and voila!; you have created a quality backlink to your website.

Another source for acquiring backlinks that usually goes unnoticed are RSS feeds. You can use RSS feed for a variety of reasons. One reason is to receive great exposure for your website or blog. Once you submit your website to an RSS Feed Directory your feed can be subscribe to by numerous readers, thus creating great exposure for your website. RSS feeds are also a great backlinks tool, you can not only generate backlinks every time your RSS feed is subscribe to, but you will also get free backlinks from each RSS feed directory you use to submit your website.

For best results submit to about 15 directories at a time to spread the amount of traffic you will receive. Spreading your traffic will also help with you Google ranking. The search engines rank websites with consistent traffic higher. You also do not want to generate too many backlinks too fast, as to not raise any eyebrows with Google.

The 12 Steps of SEO

Even a lot of the professional SEO specialists out there are so caught up in their mathematical manipulations that they forget the basics. There are twelve steps to doing solid, long lasting SEO, and they’re not all that hard.

Step 1: Do a comprehensive keyword analysis. You should have a list of keywords that’s between 20 to 40 words long. These keywords will tell you how people are looking for your topic. You may not use all of them specifically in metatags, at least not at first, but it’s a good idea to have them so you have a good idea of what people are looking for most.

Step 2: Write a decent website in HTML. You should have at least thirty pages to start with before expecting to get visitors in any quantity whatsoever. These thirty pages should be quality information, not a catalog of product descriptions. Provide plenty of background and context on the core subject of your website.

Step 3: Write metatags for each individual page on your website. These metatags should have the four or five keywords that define the page in question, along with an eye-catching title and description. Titles and descriptions don’t show up directly on your page, but they do show up in the search engine results pages. Considering that the results page is where a visitor decides to visit your website or not, the title and description have to get people to want to click.

Step 4: Set up a traffic analytics program on your website. A good analytics program tells you where people are going, what they’re doing, how they’re getting to your site and how long they’re staying. All of this is valuable information when trying to maximize your site’s appeal and ease of use.

Step 5: Submit your site to search engines. This gets your site indexed more quickly by the search engine spiders and gets you quicker results. In order to get maximum results, you may want to create or get an accurate XML sitemap before doing the submissions.

Step 6: Get quality inbound links. You can do this by asking people you know nicely, by participating in communities, or by waiting for the high quality information you’re providing to serve someone else as a reference. This last is, of course, the slowest.

Step 7: Start a blog, and update it religiously. You don’t have to do it every day, but you should at least do it every week. That’s the only way you’ll build a loyal following that looks forward to your new content. Of course, if they’re not on the same server, your blog and your website should be interlinked. If you can’t write yourself, hire a professional SEO copywriter to do your writing.

Step 8: Publish SEO articles and SEO press releases about your core topic that will lure people into your website. The idea is to provide quality, relevant information that will make readers want to know more. Again, these should be high quality, well written and informative articles. They should also lead to specific landing pages, not all to your home page. For example, if you’re providing information about one of your products, the link at the bottom should go to your product page, not your home page. Readers aren’t going to go navigating your site in order to find your product.

Step 9: Get listed in directories that specifically cater to your particular product or service. Some themed directories will let you list for free, some charge a small fee. Be careful to only do this with quality directories. Having a link on a link farm will only get you blasted by the search engines.

Step 10: Maintain your website. Get a program that will check for broken links every so often, and fix them promptly. If you have too many glitches on your server, your visitors will fly away like so many migrating birds.

Step 11: Resubmit your website’s updated sitemap every time you make an addition or move a page. This both allows the search engines to offer up-to-date information to their users, which they like, and you become more trustworthy to your customers because they can see that someone’s home, so to speak.

Step 12: Provide a contact form of some kind on your website so that your customers can talk to you. Don’t do a “squeeze page” where a visitor has to give up an email address before he or she can read the rest of the site, but do provide something through which people can make comments or ask for more information.

Realtors - How to Save Sales and Eliminate Squabbles Caused by a Buyers Inspection

Why do buyers that perform a DIY Home Inspection end up purchasing the house more often, than a buyer that has a hired inspection? And why do sellers that do their own home inspection sell their homes in less time, and have a smoother closing process, than a seller than does not do a home inspection? Read On.

Home buyers that do their own DIY Home Inspection are less likely to develop a list of repairs and concerns as large as a hired Home Inspectors list of repairs and concerns. Why is that? A buyer doing their own Home Inspection, with a good inspection guide (instruction) and report will see defects that they know they are capable of correcting, or they have a friend or relative that can makes these repairs. Consequently, the defects are not listed on their inspection report.

Another reason: After signing an earnest money agreement, home buyers, often talk and plan on remodeling certain areas of their new home. They are not concerned at all with these areas, while inspecting. Defects found in these areas are rarely on their report. While a hired inspector will list everything he can find to limit his liability. And last but not least, the dialog between the hired Home Inspector and the buyer, while discussing issues found, can “kill deals”. The communications by the Home Inspector needs to be handled just right and delicately, or the buyer ends up with a bleak picture of the home, when in fact the home is a solid home.

A Buyer doing their own DIY Home Inspection gives them more free time in their new home and they will know the home better and have a better understanding of the working components. This builds a stronger tie between the buyer and the home.

A good DIY Home Inspection Report should have included, a “Pre-Inspection Agreement”. The Pre-Inspection Agreement should be written to eliminate any liability between you, (the Realtor), and your client (buyer or seller). Your client would simply read and sign the agreement and give you a copy for your records.

Most DIY Home Inspection Reports on the market do not have instructions to guide your client through their inspection or a Pre-inspection Agreement. They consist of a checklist only, without an instruction guide. These Inspection Reports are useless unless the user has a good back ground in construction and the working components of a home.

Today, many Realtors are recommending to their home sellers, to have a Home Inspection before, or at the time it is listed. And for good reasons, statistics will show homes that have had a Pre-Inspection before the listing, have sold faster, because the buyer has more confidence in the home, especially if the seller is willing to do an inspection on the home they are selling. The seller is being “up front” about the home.

For the Realtor, knowing what defects are present gives you and the seller time to discuss what should be fixed and what should not, (perhaps sell As Is). And, it allows the seller to do their own repairs or shop for the best price for the repairs. The seller’s inspection will provide an accurate and complete disclosure protection for the Realtor and the seller. It may also be used to help the seller rethink the selling price of the home.

A good selling point for sellers is to have your completed Inspection Report available for buyers when they walk through. Always leave the completed report in a conspicuous place. Reading this Report is valuable to the potential buyer and shows the seller is up front about the home and its condition. The report will show defects and if they have been corrected, it is suggested to give them that update in the report as well.

A Buyer or Seller does not have to be an expert to diagnose many problems found in a home and most repairs have do-it-yourself remedies.

Gary is knowledgeable with over forty years in general construction including twenty years in the Home Inspection business and authored the BAIR (Building Analysis Inspection Report) System. He has put forth his experience of over 7000 inspections in the BAIR System. It is designed to be thorough yet easy to follow. It includes a checklist for each section as well as a summary page at the end of the report for your evaluation.
